Safran has been present in India for over 60 years in all three of its core markets - aerospace, defense, and security. With a workforce of more than 2,500 local employees, it undertakes activities ranging from design and R&D to production and maintenance. Safran now powers and/or equips 65% of India's airplanes and helicopters.
In October 2016, Safran Helicopter Engines inaugurated Helicopter Engines MRO Pvt. Limited (HE-MRO), a Joint Venture between Safran and HAL in Goa, southwest India. The new centre will provide maintenance repair and overhaul (MRO) services for Safran TM333 and HAL Shakti engines installed on HAL-built helicopters. Activities will start in the coming months with up to 50 engines repaired each year, ramping up to 150 in the future. By then, the initial staff of 30 will also grow to 100. It will start is repair activity in 2018.
Safran Helicopter Engines strategy in India is built around this long-standing cooperation with HAL. A key element of the partnership is the Shakti / Ardiden 1H1 and the Ardiden 1U, due to be certified in 2018. Safran Helicopter Engines India is managed by Satish Kirtikar and employs 15 people.
